Monday Morning Website Tips

This website form “hack” will protect your time

Another Monday Morning Website Tip by Marcus Rangel

Have you ever sat on a call, a Zoom meeting, or an in-person meeting and felt like the prospective client wasn’t in the same “financial ballpark” with who you usually work with (your typical clientele)?

I did once during a lunch break when I was still working at my corporate job trying to build IMC, and after 45 minutes of talking to someone I asked the budget question to only hear, “I have budgeted $100 for a website…”

You can prevent this from happening in the future with a simple “gatekeeper” website form (a form that is hidden on your site even).

The key is asking potential clients about their budget for your goods or services before you spend your precious time on one of those calls or meetings.

You’ll no longer be screaming inside your head like Jerry Maguire, saying “Show me the money!”

This quick website idea will win back your and your team’s time by implementing this easy “hack” on your website form.

Follow these 3 easy steps to protect your time

  1. Create a “gatekeeper” form that you send out once anyone wants to talk through your goods or services. This form can be on a hidden page of your site, it’s there for you to send as a follow up form before you agree to have a meeting. Whether someone fills out a form on your website, you get a referral via text or email, or someone calls your office, this form is your ultimate gatekeeper.
  2. On this “gatekeeper” form, ask more questions to gather additional information to help you prepare or understand the client’s needs. Just make sure you ask how much “money” they have set aside for this particular good or service. You can set options based on the budgets you work with or have them list an “other” amount so you get a clear picture of what they’ve set aside.
  3. Require this form to be filled out before you or your team meets with anyone.

Are there exceptions to the rule?

Yes! The good news is you decide who gets the exception. I don’t send this to established clients I’ve worked with or if a company like Nike or Under Armour contacted me about a website, I would know they have a substantial budget, so I wouldn’t send them this form. It’s about using your best judgment to protect your time.

About Marcus Rangel

I've been working with small businesses owners to craft not only beautiful custom websites, but clear, clever and concise messages to reach their prospects since 2005.

I officially hung up my "corporate cleats" to be an entrepreneur and small business owner in the summer of 2020. IMC, which started as a side hustle early in the mornings before the sun was even up in 2017, is what led me down this path as a small business owner myself. I focus on helping other small business owners continually stay in front of people & prospects with email marketing, create websites that generate leads with great engagement, and produce video content that are meant for the digital era we're in.

When I'm not creating, you can find me hanging out with my incredible family on our front lawn or on my OneWheel around the big city of Owasso, OK.

IMC Awarded 2026 Cinematography Video of the Year by Pro MovieMaker Magazine

I had never been to Wyoming until the summer of 2025… and I can’t believe it took that long! I got the great chance to work with a 3rd generation ranch owner, Andy Stellpflug, to help share his family’s legacy of their ranching operation that’s been around since 1913. Now I did get to experience pretty much every type of weather when I was up there including rain, breathtaking sunrises, strong winds, and quiet sunsets. But all of that led to a video that I was really proud to submit to the 2026 Pro Movie Maker Filmmaker of the Year Awards. I just got word today that it won, making IMC a two time winner! I had previously won in 2023 for the drone work…

Where to Place a Message From the Owner on Your Website

Your website’s most visited page is… you guessed it, your homepage! That’s why I always recommend having a “message from the owner/founder” on the homepage. It immediately humanizes your brand for the website visitor and puts a face to your company. It also leads your website visitor to the about us page (most likely your second most visited page) if worded and done right. What your message should contain: Here are three website examples that I’ve designed and launched recently in 2026 that feature a “Message from the owner” for you to check out! https://walkermasonryinc.com/ https://dupreefarms.com/ https://steep.marketing/

Super Navigation Upgrade to Your Website

One of the biggest improvements you can make to your existing website is your navigation. The standard “dropdown” is great, but upgrading to a well designed navigation dropdown – or super navigation is really a showstopper. Think about it this way, if a new website visitor is choosing in 5 seconds or less if they want to stay on your website, showcasing your navigation is a great way to stop them in their tracks to want to look around longer.
