When to Ask for a Google Review (And How to Get Them)
Another Monday Morning Website Tip by Marcus Rangel
Have you ever struggled with getting clients to leave you a review on google? It might feel a bit uncomfortable at first, but in my experience if you ask at the right time, it’s not uncomfortable at all… and with AI searches now sometimes including your google reviews next to the result, this is very important.
This process is easy, almost as easy as Mahomes, Brady, or Jordan used to have getting to the big game (if only Josh Allen could get his hands on those keys LOL).
There’s just 3 keys to this to work.
- Timing
- The right client
- Personalized
This is not a one-size fits all approach for every business, but by all means this should give you a framework to make a process.
Step 1: Timing: When’s the right time to ask?
Once you finish the work for a client, that’s the perfect time to ask. Here’s why, whether you are a financial advisor, a roofing company, or any type of service based business, there is a finish line for the work to be signed off on by the client and when your team moves onto the next client. It’s not when they sign a contract, or for sure not when they walk through your doors for the first time (that’d be a bit Michael Scott awkward).
Why this works? Because you and your team should know if the client has had a good experience with your business.
Step 2: Which clients to ask?
There’s two roads a client took with you, and you and your team know if that experience was good or bad. If it was good, proceed to step 3, if not don’t ask (and ask yourself if you should take on clients like that in the future… and that’s another subject!)
Step 3: Personalized email
Come up with a turn key (but personalized) email to send out – more brownie points if you send a client a cool surprise in the mail thanking them for working with you as this step is a lot easier to do that. This way, you give them a heads up that a care package is on its way as part of the message.
Make sure YOU or the actual person that worked with them sends this email to the client, not your assistant or not through an email campaign. This needs to be from you with 1-2 lines about how you enjoyed working with them and why it would mean a lot for them to leave you a review.
Something like this, “Hey client, just a quick heads up that I’d love it if you could leave a 5 star review on Google about your experience with us. If you have a few minutes for (your company name) – it really helps other (customers/small businesses) in the (your city) area find out about us like you did.
Thanks so much for your help!

About Marcus Rangel
I've been working with small businesses owners to craft not only beautiful custom websites, but clear, clever and concise messages to reach their prospects since 2005.
I officially hung up my "corporate cleats" to be an entrepreneur and small business owner in the summer of 2020. IMC, which started as a side hustle early in the mornings before the sun was even up in 2017, is what led me down this path as a small business owner myself. I focus on helping other small business owners continually stay in front of people & prospects with email marketing, create websites that generate leads with great engagement, and produce video content that are meant for the digital era we're in.
When I'm not creating, you can find me hanging out with my incredible family on our front lawn or on my OneWheel around the big city of Owasso, OK.

Amazing! When’s the last time you said that after working with someone? What made you say that or tell others about your experience? We recently had our patio worked on by the Gorilla Brothers, and oh my, it was amazing! They communicated—actually over-communicated—the entire time. Even when we were on vacation, we opened our email to find daily uploaded pictures showing the progress. Any change orders were approved by us before anything was added to our budget. Before signing the contract, did we know their process would make us feel like our patio project would receive the same attention as a big commercial project with a huge budget? Both Anna and I had an inclination this was the right builder, but we ultimately went with…
