Email Subject Lines
Another Monday Morning Website Tip by Marcus Rangel
There are a ton of bad email subject lines when it comes to email marketing…
And it’s probably only going to get worse with more AI created lines. Here’s some I’ve gotten from the “spammers” out there lately that I’m sure you can relate to.
“Affordable Advertising Services Content Marketing”
“Unlock your services potential worldwide“
“Learning Management System (LMS) Customers Contact Information”
What makes these so bad? They are sooooo long… and don’t sound like someone who is truly emailing me or you.
Here’s my strategy for coming up for email subject lines – quickly.
- I look at my inbox to remind myself how most people write a subject line. Yes, it’s usually one or two word subject lines.
- Think through what would make me want to open something with a short subject line.
- Test the email by sending it to myself. I know I’ve done a good job when I have scheduled an email for a client and it shows in my inbox and I actually think it’s from them and not an email blast.
Yes, it’s not rocket science and doesn’t require a masters degree to craft an email subject line, but it’s the first step in making sure your mail that you send online does get read.
About Marcus Rangel
I've been working with small businesses owners to craft not only beautiful custom websites, but clear, clever and concise messages to reach their prospects since 2005.
I officially hung up my "corporate cleats" to be an entrepreneur and small business owner in the summer of 2020. IMC, which started as a side hustle early in the mornings before the sun was even up in 2017, is what led me down this path as a small business owner myself. I focus on helping other small business owners continually stay in front of people & prospects with email marketing, create websites that generate leads with great engagement, and produce video content that are meant for the digital era we're in.
When I'm not creating, you can find me hanging out with my incredible family on our front lawn or on my OneWheel around the big city of Owasso, OK.

The KC Royals had just one the World Series… finally. They have hours, days in fact of footage to get you hyped about the next season and have everyone ready to buy next years season tickets. As a creative team, we had decided to buy season tickets as giveaways to our team and the credit card was in my hands. I guess I was expecting something magical when I clicked the “buy now” button to complete an order of an entire season – a message from Dayton Moore, a highlight reel of last season, a photo of them holding the trophy from last year, a countdown timer to opening day… something. And what came up after I clicked buy? A simple, boring, thanks for your…
Let’s face it, people are on your site to see you and what your business offers. Photos are essential for a quality website, but here are some examples of what you should be using. A great quality headshot Like my friend Rick above from Sardis Events, this is a great example of a photo you should use. Notice I didn’t say glamour shot, but a high quality headshot to show who you are and often how you will appear to your clients in an everyday setting when they interact with you. Don’t take the suit and tie pic if you will never show up this way. This is who Rick is every time I interact with him. Use real people If you are a restaurant,…
Big text, gifs, large photos and “storybrand” conversational copy, it’s all part of how the web is going in 2020. What’s great about these trends is websites are now truly adapting to using the entire screen and they are honestly starting to look like a print pieces. I feel that in 2020, the days of sites having 12 point font should be over. Let’s look at why. Big text, no really big text is awesome! We all know that your website visitors will only stay on your site for a casual glance (say 8 seconds). Knowing this, you have to have scannable headlines. I gave our site big (but short) headlines and minimal text below each headline. Why waste time to write text if no…
